Riddles in the Dark

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.
 - J. R. R. Tolkein, The Hobbit

Anyone who read The Hobbit or read the cartoon version of it (which I enjoyed very much) might remember the answer to this riddle presented to Bilbo by Gollum. Time is, of course, the answer.

Time is a slippery thing, particularly to me. I have an absolutely horrid sense of timing, so I have to keep a watch or something with a clock on it with me at all times or else I will take absolutely forever at what I'm doing. My various roommates over the years have noticed this, particularly when I'm in the shower. I seriously try to not take longer than 10 minutes, and I will think I succeeded. But then I look at the nearest clock and it's been between 20 and 30. It doesn't feel anywhere near like that. I have no idea what to do about it except maybe find a way to put a clock in the shower. Not ideal, especially because the shower I'm using right now is pretty small, and I am trying to not bang the ceiling and wake up everyone when I shower.

  1. Do you feel that you have any other ADD symptoms? I feel that I have ADD and one of the things I have a very hard time with is time estimation. I'm terrible at it. Even if I've done something a number of times and know how long it takes me, I'll still think I can do it in less time. I couldn't tell you how many times I've been late to various things. It's slightly more easy for me to manage as an adult but only because I pay attention to this issue and because I often have children who are counting on me to get them places at a certain time. I can sure sympathize with you!
